Brrr!

We came back from an extra long winter break to
some icy polar fun in class!

We learned about the letter Ii: building it, reading it, writing it, and making the sounds.

We dripped icy colors, then tilted our tray to swirl them to make our January placemats:

An ice cream shop opened up in our kitchen center! Our kitchen went through some changes over break. All the items in it have a labelled bin for storage so that we can keep it organized. We also have a mop, broom, duster, and sponges to keep our shop squeaky clean.

Winter time reading! We have been reading lots of winter and polar themed stories at circle time. Some of these carried over into our centers.

After the reading The Mitten, we used story pieces to sequence the animals that crept inside to keep warm. We also colored a simplified early reader of the story. We then started work on our newest class book based on the story. We painted a big mitten, then searched through magazines for a picture of an animal to hide inside. We'll add text soon, and compile the pages into a book.

We are learning about polar animals!

We have a new interactive bulletin board in class. The children have been matching uppercase to lowercase letters, and making the sounds as they go.

Our Let's Find Out magazine was all about snow this week! After all the excitement of the real snow last week, we enjoyed playing in artificial snow with all our polar animal figures.

Our sensory table is full of snow, ice and animals too this month.

Friday, we played with real ice at centers! We had big bins filled with large ice blocks, small cubes, polar animals and familiar Frozen characters.
We also did some ice painting with frozen cubes of paint.

There was some birthday fun this week! We got to celebrate turning 5 with two of our friends.
