Dd is for Dog Fun!

We have been working on the letter Dd this week and had some fun with ducks and dogs! We colored in Dd ponds and glued some duck macaroni inside.  Using some long blue sentence strips, we practiced lots of D and d, then turned those strips into cute duck hats. At circle time we came up with a few new Dd words each day, until we had quite a list by Friday!

Practicing patterns: We've been working on our patterning skills. Last week we started patterns with the flannel board. This week we got out our pet stamps and made some wonderful stamping patterns on our bone cut outs. We are learning that we can read a pattern, and that reading it out loud helps us figure out what comes next.

Listening skills: After reading the book Taxi Dog, we worked with our crayons to carefully follow directions to add details to our picture just how Mrs. Horton told us. For example, she would say "draw a bone next to Maxi" or "color the tires black". It was a real challenge to LISTEN carefully to directions, and do just what she said (which is such an important skill for kindergarten next year!)

Our cooperative play center this week has been the vet box. Our caring vets have patched up and comforted all kinds of pets this week, from dogs and cats to lobsters and baby elephants. We had bumps, upset tummies, broken bones to check on the X-ray, blood pressure and temperatures to monitor, and LOTS of bandaging to get done. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we have some future veterinarians in our group!

Sharing continued to be a special part of circle time:

Friday was CLIFFORD DAY!!  We all wore red to celebrate this big red dog. We started out with some buddy bone counting  and Clifford storybook reading at circle time, then started our centers. We made Clifford hand puppets, painted with dog biscuits, used red play dough, and pretended to be vets and dog house builders. After another Clifford book, we played a few rounds of "Clifford Says" and ate some dog bone shaped graham crackers for snack. Then we headed out to the playground at the end of another busy fun week!
