1/10 - 1/11

Thursday and Friday were spent doing lots of activities based on Jan Brett's The Mitten, which is a story about how lots of forest animals hide inside a very stretchy mitten to get warm. After reading the story at circle time, we went to our centers.

First, we hunted to through magazines for pictures of animals that might decide to hide in our mitten. We carefully cut them out, along with a large paper mitten.

At another table, we worked on making a snowy background for our animals.

Our third table center was using pasta shapes to create snowflakes.

Our last center on Thursday was cooperative pretend play with story props. We used small plastic animals and mittens to retell and extend the story together. It was a lot of fun!

At our second circle time, we learned a song about the book, set to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell. First, we sang the song and took turns putting paper animals in the big mitten. After a couple of round of this, we pretended to be the animals and squeezed ourselves into a big mitten outline on the rug. When we got to the part where the bear sneezed, we all popped out of the mitten!

On Friday, it was time to take all the project pieces we had worked on at the above centers and put them together with our own writing. Writing down what we want to say can be tricky and overwhelming, so we did this one on one with the teacher. Look for these to be hung up in the hall next week, as well as an update here on the blog. We also played in some gooey snow at the sensory table, made winter scenes on the flannel boards, created a new page for our scrapbooks and had more time to cut, paste and write about pictures we found in all the magazines.

Another big activity on Friday was sharing our weekly homework assignment with each other. Check out all the wonderful words everyone found this week! We glued them down on some poster board and added it to our classroom door. There is still room for more, though, so if you find a new word to read bring it in and we'll add it to our door!
