Our Third Week- Hh, Houses, Shapes and More!

We started our week off by finally getting to peel off our glue guys from the Too Much Glue story (see earlier posts). It took a LONG time for a big puddle of glue to dry, but what fun it was to peel our little people off the plastic and see all the fun stuff still stuck inside that body of glue!

We used two other imaginative books to link to our learning:

If I Built a House, by Chris Van Dusen, takes a tour through a child's imaginary house. There are towers, aquarium rooms, a car wash style shower, big slides, and more. After reviewing our basic shapes, we picked out a bunch of pieces to fit together into our own idea of the perfect house. Our houses had pools, towers, slides, magic rooms- if we could imagine it, we built it!

You might have noticed some little friends helping us out- our Mini Me buddies spent the day with us at centers on Monday building houses, at the sensory table, creating our book pages, etc.
(You can see our book pages of our completed class book in the previous post from 9/15)

Press Here, by Herve Tullet, is an interactive book that was a big hit with our class! Each page has directions to follow : press the yellow dot 3 times, tilt the book to the right/ left, shake the page, etc. After each action, you turn the page to see the result in the next illustration. No batteries, no beeps- but a LOT of fun! Look for more books by this author at the library for some fun reading together time at home. We used this book to springboard an art/ fine motor activity painting circles and to explore some magnets.

How did the page get so dirty?
Some helpers need to blow the dust off.

using cups to stamp circles on a pizza board

We used multiple colors of paint to fill in our small circles. We tried really hard to keep the paint inside the black lines- that kind of fine motor control will help us with our writing too.

Our other Press Here center had us exploring some dot magnets. These were floating in ziploc bags of water, and we used magnet wands to try and drag them through the water to line up on top on dot stickers on our tray. Tricky, tricky, tricky- we needed some problem solving skills and patience!

WOO-HOO! Got one!

Taking a break from the bags and just enjoying some exploration with a lot of magnets is fun, too. Plus, with our magnet wands we can clean up a ton of little chips in a snap-
they jump right on the pile!

In other centers and activities:

We practiced the letter Hh, started on some guided reading in a book about homes in holes, drove around some letters/numbers/shapes, practiced some puzzling words and enjoyed rug time building and playing with our houses. Our Letter Builders came out for the first time, and we did a fantastic job taking the straight and curved sections and turning them into letters, numbers, and shapes.

We also used our purple sand trays to practice our writing. Ms. Lesley popped in to deliver some papers, and just had to stop and write too!

We've been talking about opposites, and hunted through magazines for pictures to cut out of things that go INSIDE and OUTSIDE our house collage.
Look closely- you might see our family of ghosts living inside the house. :)

We ended the week with a sweet happy birthday treat!
