Wednesday and Thursday, 11/7-11/8

Yesterday, we started off our morning cutting paper to build some Ll's for our morning work.

After cleaning up our mess, we worked on adding some more words to our Ll word list. Then we got ready to head to the library for our November visit for story time. We heard lots of great books, sang some songs and played instruments.

On our way back to our classroom, we detoured to the church grounds to collect nature items for our art projects this week. Everyone had a paper lunch sack to fill up with natural materials that were 1) on the ground and 2) fit inside the bag.

We found sticks, bark, pinecones, pine needles, rocks, acorns, moss, and, of course, lots of leaves! Everything was spread out to dry overnight, since some things were just a bit damp if they were laying in the shade. Ms. Heather also took the acorns, moss, sticks and pine cones to the kitchen and baked them awhile to get rid of any little critters that might crawl out on our art projects. (Ms. Heather is a big fan of bugs in the garden, but not so much a fan of them in the classroom!) Once everything was dry and de-crittered, we had a great variety of materials to work with on Thursday:

Thursday morning, we did a quick morning job with Ll again, then got together at the rug for some book fun. First, we reread the big book "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves" and placed story pieces in our class old lady as we read. Then, we read a new favorite of Ms. Heather's: Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. All of us were amazed at the illustrations of many different animals and people all made out of leaves! Next, we worked together to sort out a bucket of our leaves by size. Naturally, our next job was to use all those nature items to create our own works of art! After a yummy snack of fresh orange slices, we had a dancing good time with Ms. Meghan for music, then packed up early so we could go over to the church for singing practice with the 3s and other 4s. Then we were off to the playground for some run around time before car pool and lunch bunch.

These projects will take a least a day (maybe 2) to dry because we used a lot of glue to hold all those heavy bumpy materials! Pictures will be posted, so stay tuned...
