The Mitten

This week, we used the Jan Brett classic retelling of The Mitten as a springboard for lots of learning!

Circle time word building! After talking about the letter Ii last week, we focused on the "it" word family this week. We learned that letters (and sounds) buddy up to make words.

Silly story song! We had the BEST time with a mitten song this week! Some of us were mitten holders, and the rest of us pretended to be animals from the story. One by one we crept into the mitten, until a big sneeze sent us all popping out. We played over and over again until everyone got to try multiple roles.

First thing in the morning, the kids always have table time. They've learned to always start at table 1, where they will usually find some sort of fine motor activity, then they can choose among activities on the other tables until carpool is finished and we are ready to start our day. This week we did some handwriting, a little cutting, painting and a mitten matching worksheet.

Other tables held building toys, word building puzzle cards, envelopes and note writing, etc.

Centers! We continued our Ii learning by making Mr. It word builders.

Snowy Sensory- we had a few different sensory choices this week. Our regular sensory table has fluffy snow, and we added mittens and gloves to work on our independent self care skills. We had cool frozen slime with shiny jewels, and made snowballs and camouflaged polar animals in a snowy mixture of conditioner and cornstarch. The first day we had a whole center devoted to snow fun, and then used them throughout the week after we finished other activities.

The Mitten pretend play! Using animals and mittens, we made up new stories about animals hiding together.

Letter practice!

By Friday, we were retelling the story with some mitten math. As Ms. Heather reread the book, we identified numbers and ordered the animals as we put them in a big mitten.

Each day this week, one center was devoted to our favorite authors creating a new book. We used polka dot paint rollers to paint snowballs.

We painted big mittens.

We hunted through magazines for a favorite animal picture to cut out and hide in our mitten.

We wrote an "I see" sentence about our animals.

We worked our fine motor skills by lacing our painted mittens.

Until TA-DA! Here are our newest lift the flap book pages! They are hung out in the hall right now for everyone to see before they will be bound together and added to our classroom library.
