Even though it was a short day, we packed a lot of fun into our Get Acquainted Day on Thursday!
After finding our cubbies and putting away any stuff (THANK YOU for all the supplies!!), everyone walked around the tables to look for our names. There was a big first letter there waiting to be colored and decorated. After coloring the background, we settled in to make some decisions about which buttons, beads, sparkles, and shapes were going to make that big letter just as unique as each of us. After we finished, we pushed in our chairs and learned where to take our name cards. Then it was time to play!
Every morning, 2 toys are "open" on the rug. Today, we had kitchen and cars/ trucks. It was great to see old friends, make new friends, and check out our new classroom together!
After some quick and easy cleanup (our new class are champs at this!), we gathered on the rug for an interactive story: Cupcake: A Journey to Special by Charise Harper. It's all about a plain cupcake who feels lonely, overlooked and ordinary next to all the other fabulously decorated cupcakes. His new friend, plain Green Candle, has the same problem. Together, they try out a bunch of toppings to make Cupcake special: salty pickles, green peas, pancakes, an egg, spaghetti and even a fuzzy squirrel. We followed along with the story, and added felt pieces to match on our story board as each new topping is introduced. Then we did a quick thumbs up/ thumbs down on whether or not we thought we might like that topping on our special cupcake. In the end, having a wonderful new friend made each of them feel special, without any special toppings needed!
Can you believe that this is the first circle time?
Look how awesome we are at sitting nicely, listening, and helping out with the story!!
After that, it was time to sing Happy Birthday to Ms. Heather! We celebrated together by making cupcake treats to match our story (except we used some yummy substitutions- nobody really wanted pickles and pancakes on top of our cupcakes.)
