More Fun with Dr. Seuss

Monday we continued our Dr. Seuss themed days with fun and learning related to The Foot Book.

Here we are using our footprint to explore standard and nonstandard measurement. After making a footprint on our paper using a giant ink pad, we measured length using paperclips, noodles, and an inch ruler. We talked about "more" and "less", and wondered about why using little round noodles gave us bigger measuring numbers than long skinny noodles.

More fancy foot action was happening over at our art center with Mrs. Horton! Everyone took off a shoe and sock and got to work making some foot art. Some of us dipped our foot in paint, some of us used a brush to paint our foot multiple colors, and others strapped on big foot stampers to make big floor paintings. After some foot washing, everyone got some shoe and sock practice getting everything back on.

Tuesday was all about Green Eggs and Ham! We started by reading the book, then worked together to sort out words from the story.

Our reading group learned about the author of all these great books- Dr. Seuss! Our Let's Find Out magazine was all about this special author who wrote so many silly rhyming stories.

It wouldn't be Green Eggs and Ham day without some cooking! We stirred up a dozen eggs, added some blue color (because blue and yellow make GREEN!), added some ham and cooked up a strange looking but yummy breakfast treat (to most of us- a few decided they really did not like green eggs and ham, Sam I Am!)

We also finished up our Cat in the Hat and Thing 1 and Thing 2 projects, and had some time for project painting and block building.

Seuss-tastic Learning!

Wednesday

We came back from spring break looking a little wackier than usual- it was Wacky Wednesday! We had friends with wild hair, mixed up shoes, clothes that were backwards, mixed up and altogether wonky. It was a wonderful way to learn about the letter Ww!

For our Wacky Wednesday centers,

1- We used dry erase marker to find all the crazy mistakes in some I Spy pictures.

2- We used the Word Whammers to build some real - and wacky- words.

3- We built Ww out of wild animal print paper.

4- We played with wild animals in the water!

Thursday

Thursday was all about Bartholomew and the Oobleck! We read the book first, then made some oobleck of our own. Before mixing, we felt the dry powdery cornstarch, and the wet water. Mix them together, though, and you get something wonderfully strange! Our oobleck felt solid, but flowed. It could be crumbled, and squished.

Friday

Crazy Hat Day! Friday we wore hats in honor of The Cat in the Hat. We made some new crazy hats at centers, as well as a Cat in the Hat mask and some Things for our door (look for pics of these next week after all our glue has dried). We've been working on rhyming words, and the kids are all doing a great job hearing rhymes everywhere!

Last, but not least, we had 2 birthdays last week!
